Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology

***Keep in mind that my content is directed more for those attending public institutions of higher education in the state of Texas.

A bachelor’s degree in psychology is quite versatile, and like the associate degree, it can be used in a variety of fields. For example, you could find employment in sales, advertising, marketing, mental health technicians, social work assistants, child protective services, lab assistants, and even a teacher as long as you go through an educator training program or alternative teaching certificate route.

If you are interested in being a practitioner of psychology, remember that an associate (or a bachelor’s) could help make you eligible for licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). For more information take a look at the Texas Department of State Health Services website. Here is the link that will take you directly to the Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Program Home Page.

To be an independent practitioner in the state of Texas (open your own practice, accept insurance in your own name), you will want to plan ahead for graduate school. I discuss this more in the next few articles.

Interestingly, most people who earn a bachelor’s in psychology are not working directly in the field of psychology. However, keep in mind that psychology overlaps practically every other field, which is one of the reasons why it is so versatile.
